About Our Vision and Mission

Creative expression becomes one of the quintessential necessity for women, not just as a practice but as a weapon to fight the conflicts both at personal, societal and political levels. As most of the women from Social Welfare institutions, Telangana are first generation students emerging from disadvantaged social, economic and intellectual environments, they do not consider artistic and creative expression as an immediate agency in the learning process.

The principal outcome of the writing projects at SEW is to study and create diverse creative platforms for women coming from rural backgrounds. Diversity not only suggests a variety of art practices but an inclusivity of expression, subverting the hierarchies of language, subject and form. SEW succeeded in identifying the literary and artistic needs of women by creating platforms which call for their subjective experiences to be brought into limelight besides academics. We believe that creativity is independent of academic knowledge. The writing and art programs aid students to participate in unhesitant expression irrespective of their academic performance.

Practice and its Uniqueness :

Coming up with one’s own idea is primary criteria of the book publishing process. It is important to get students’ ideas translated into text and let the world know what they think. Once they realise the importance of their thoughts, they will understand how important it is to bring those thoughts into limelight. Students carry so many ideas and interests and those ideas may be at different stages. Some may carry just the idea, some may have full written script of the idea and some may want to write but are struggling to gather thoughts, some may be stuck in the middle of graduating their idea into a narrative. SEW helps students translate their thoughts and ideas into writing and eventually introduce them to the world as a young author.

Who can be a part of SEW?

Passionate students and lecturers of TGSWREIS family can be a part of this publishing process. Lecturers and students can collaborate with each other and work on different book ideas. For instance, one can experiment with Children’s Literature, Life writing (autobiographical), Non-fiction writing, Song writing, Translation work, Short story writing / Comic stories, Poetry writing / Haiku Poetry and Graphic Novels. One doesn’t have to worry about fitting one’s idea into one of the aforementioned genres but coming up with an idea counts. Students can also bring in their life experiences into the book. There is no language criteria. The works can be in their native tongue or any language of their choice.

Few More Perspectives:

1. Philosophical perspective: To comprehend the idea of self as a grave necessity to exist, and therefore, looking at the works of women graduate students through an existential lens.

2. Educational perspective: To understand the significance of students’ engagement with art and incorporating art education in the Social Welfare institutions curriculum.

3. Practical implications: Encouraging students to take part in literary and art activities and to publish their works ― collaborating with visual artists, poets, institutions and professionals from diverse artistic fields.

4. Employability: Developing critical and creative thinking skills among students through creative practices, which will shape them as potential individuals in the current competitive world.
